中之島より下流には、かつて淀川河口に蓋をするように九条島が横たわっていたが、1684年（貞享元年）に河村瑞賢が水運と治水のために現在のような直線状に開削し、安治川と命名。 かつては錦橋の直前で南へ西横堀川も分岐していたが、1962年（昭和37年）に阪神高速1号環状線の建設のために埋め立てられた。 また、1878年（明治11年）には田蓑橋の上流側から大阪駅に向けて堂島掘割（梅田入堀川）が、堂島掘割分岐のやや上流側から土佐堀川まで中之島掘割が開削された。
